While students of Dublin Art Studio are free to set their own course of study, we find that many students prefer a guided approach to their practice. For this reason, we offer syllabi that facilitate a clear and structured path for learning and navigating the complex world of oil painting and drawing. By following each stage, from underpainting to the use of the full palette, students and practicing artists alike will see their skill level and innate understanding of painting and drawing progress. Each stage is designed to lead seamlessly into the next.

Brushwork, and the inherent nature of the medium becomes understood through the study of quality art works and each student’s own exploration through practice. This form of teaching draws on a long tradition of the European atelier, in which knowledge is passed down from a practicing artist to students who work alongside the artist in the studio. The Dublin Art Studio approach emphasizes learning-by-doing, supported by live demonstration from the instructor. While this syllabus lays out clear steps for incremental development of key artistic skills, we also believe people learn best by identifying and practicing compositions, themes, and artists of personal interest. Students practice fixed exercises and then immediately implement those same techniques in their own work with personal subject matter or images they choose to work from. By following this approach all students simultaneously learn new technique while developing as artists in their own right. This makes Dublin Art Studio distinctly different from other art courses.

The understanding of light and form in drawing and painting are essential in these syllabi and will often be returned to during teaching. These syllabi are suited to all who wish to study painting in a serious way. It is also suitable for students and artists of all levels; it is very helpful for those who wish to develop their portfolios for art college and practicing artists who wish to improve their skills by studying the techniques of particular painters of interest. These classes are also appropriate for those who would like to study in a professional environment but are not in a position to attend a full-time college course.
